To be in these waters is to sense how our own bodies, like the land, are porous and inseparable from the fragile cycles of water that sustain life. The Nieuwkoopse Plassen is a landscape where water preserves the layered history of human intervention and natural processes. Formed through peat extraction and shaped by flooding, drainage, and dike building, it stands as both a scar of human activity and a living ecosystem. Reeds, rivers, and shifting skies continue to transform the area, reminding us that this place is not static but constantly evolving through the interplay of human and more- than-human forces. Floating in these waters reveals how deeply human life is entangled with aquatic systems. The region’s cycles of drought, flood, and contamination mirror the vulnerabilities within our own bodies, which are equally porous and dependent on water’s flows. To listen to this landscape is to recognise that we, too, carry water’s history within us—our survival inseparable from the fragile, shared fate of the waters that sustain us. Based on an extensive artistic research project by Zarske in and around the Nieuwkoopse Plassen wetlands area in The Netherlands (2025-2026).
